An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) (http://aiamee.com/) in India is a person specifically licensed or authorised by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India, to certify the airworthiness (fit to fly) of an aircraft and its systems. All civil aircraft are required to be certified airworthy before each flight by a qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
All Maintenance on an aircraft is to be carried out in accordance with rules and is to be certified by the licenced/authorised AME. Only after such certification aircraft can be flown.
AME licence can be obtained by undergoing AME training in an approved AME college/school. You have to pass DGCA AME licence Examination which are held by DGCA three times in a year. Thereafter you can take up apprenticeship in an airline or Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) and learn maintenance of specific aircraft. Once you have qualified appropriate DGCA module exams and fulfill experience criteria you may be granted Cat A certification authorisation. After this your career rises rapidly and your salary and stature rises with each qualification. After qualifying for specific aircraft approved course, which is paid for by the airline/AMO one becomes a type rated AME holding B1.1, or B1.2 or B2 licence as per his training. Now he joins the elite club of much sought after AME’s.
